Tweed River Outing Trip Report

The weekend as usual started early on the Friday with 7 boats hitting the water.  The trip down from Brisbane was an easy run on the freeway straight to Fingal.  The boat ramp at Fingal was very good with a two car ramp that backed into a small lagoon for easy launching.  The weather closed in during the afternoon with frequent showers and a small thunder storm, but we all soldiered on.  There was ample car and trailer parking at Chinderah RV Storage which was a couple of kilometers down the road on the shore of the Tweed River.  Once parked we jumped aboard "Monte" and Les ferried us back to our boats at Fingal (thanks Les).  From there we mustered on the northern side of Ukerebagh Island for a calm but wet night.

Saturday started with a better promise of good weather, and although the occasional showers kept passing through it was overall pretty good.  We returned to the Fingal ramp to pick up another 7 boats.  From Fingal we travelled upstream to Tumbulgum, a small town most famous for it's pub.  Most of us anchored off into a small inlet off the main channel for another calm night.  Tumbulgum consists of a main street with the pub of course, a couple of cafes which serve a breakfast, and a couple of antique shops.  There was a pontoon next to a boat ramp opposite the pub (surprise) that we could attach our tenders too while we explored the local area.  Dinner at the pub was excellent with very good food, wine and company.

Sunday saw the rain disappear, replaced with glorious sunshine and a slight breeze. Most gathered in town for a morning catchup with some taking advantage of the local cafes for breaky.  Some even hit the pub, but that was for coffee apparently.  Eventually everyone lazily made their way further upstream to the little town of Murwillumbah.  We anchored in the main channel  below, you guessed it, a pub. There was a small pontoon on the bank of the park which allowed easy access via tender.  Happy hour started around 4pm as usual in a local park and continued into dinner around the electric bbq's.  George and Lynn turned up by road, and Tony who lives locally also came along. It was a great evening with a sky full of stars for a change.

Monday came with plenty of sunshine and an almost flat river to cruise home along.  Think most of us wanted to stay longer.

This trip was definitely up there as one of the good ones with thanks to Keith and Edna for all their planning and organising over the long weekend.
