Report Budds Beach
January 2011 - Photos from the event
Enroute to Horizon Shores Bill and I called in to Ikea - our first visit. We weren’t quite confident enough to park in the undercover car park with the boat. Although it did appear to be very high, imagine the embarrassment of having the boat lodged firm in the entrance. We managed to find a spot at the front of the store – the Whittley looked huge, as they do when out of the water, and it drew quite a lot of attention. After some very successful shopping (including a fabulous RED coffee table for $10) we continued on to Horizon Shores and then straight down to the Southport Yacht Club where we had booked a berth overnight.
A group of fellow “Whittlyers” were also staying at the yacht club and had arranged to have dinner there that night. We had previously organised to have dinner elsewhere so met up with our mates later for an after dinner coffee back at the yacht club.
There we met new members Tony and Gill Walsh and their daughter Zennie. Tony and Gill, who come from northern NSW, have only recently bought their Whittley, “Hard Yakka”, and are keen to become involved with the club.
Saturday was a beautiful day and people headed off in all directions to make the most of the great weather; some went up the Nerang River, others to Marine Stadium and quite a few to the northern side of Wavebreak Island for lunch and a swim.
There were 12 boats gathered at Budds Beach in the afternoon for the usual nibblies, drinks and a BBQ in the park. Richard and Susan Lane and Commodore Pete and Miranda Mitchell drove down from Brisbane to catch up with everyone. Pete welcomed new members, Tony, Gill and Zennie Walsh as well as the Taylor family who have recently bought “Shiraz”. Unfortunately, the O’Connors who are other new members had to turn back before they got to Budds Beach.
A very calm and peaceful night was spent on the water before groups of people gathered in the morning for a chat or breakfast at the nearby restaurant.
Budds Beach is an excellent venue for our outings because of the great on shore facilities and the calm overnight anchorage. Our thanks to Keith and Edna Miller for organising this event.
