The weather
was a negative to start but we had a great turnout of members. Some of us stayed at least one day in the caravan park at Iluka where we received exceptional service. Highly recommended. A chain of help saw most members onto the water at the boat ramp as the ramp is not suitable below half tide. We took off for local exploration around Yamba till late Saturday morning then off up river. Just about every small village on the river as far as Grafton was swamped with members sampling the local coffee & eats (shared at times with a sailing club outing). The first
stop was at MacLean where the river splits into two arms. WELL – yours truly
found that the river contains rock and having misread the entrance buoy to the
south arm, my prop was totalled. Not only that but I took about 100mm of
tip off the end of the leg. No other damage I have since found.
Interestingly, money will fix everything. The prop was re-built, the pitch
changes a little, the tip rebuilt and a full service on the boat. Tip:
Carry a spare prop. Can’t imaging the difficulty I could have been in. Next stop was at Brushgrove, the re-joining of the two river arms, making a great scene with an overnight stop and a great meal at the local pub. Next day saw
more coffee stops ending up at Grafton at an ideal landing and picnic spot. The
wind was howling and the river had small waves but the shelter at the picnic
area made for a most relaxing afternoon and full moon evening. This is a
venue that we must re-visit, even if it is every second year. Thanks to
Graham & Cheryl for hosting this outing.
