Hi Skippers and First Mates,

The event was well attended with about thirteen boats arriving for the event. The Saturday was a bit windy on the Southport Broadwater with wind gusts, I suspect, at around 15 to 20 kts. However we were well sheltered within the confines of Marine Stadium. (Sometimes referred to as Bums Bay . That’s where some people “bum” a permanent mooring and not pay for it). It was also pleasing to see a number of new faces along and trust that they will become regular boating buddies.

The Saturday was supposed to herald the beginning of our monthly workshop segment whereby an experienced boating member would speak and possibly demonstrate for a short time specific boating techniques and share information to we novices. Regrettably, due to the sloppy weather conditions the topic of “Docking” at Sanctuary Cove Marina had to be abandoned.

However, I was lucky enough to have Les Tuton guide me on the finer points of anchoring off a shore. Indeed, I think I also saw Ian Ashley discussing similar issues with some of our new friends. Eventually these workshops will be advertised on a monthly basis and should you wish to participate you will be made most welcome.

Saturday afternoon at the BBQ and drinks on the beach was a real hoot. So many members and their friends arrived to share in our social gathering. I noticed that Owen and Judy Oxley arrived minus “Olivier” but with new found rellos. We don’t mind if you want to bring your rellos, Judy, we all know that you’ll have a good time and that’s the main thing.

Saturday night saw a decent storm descend upon us and I thought “Are we going to move, are we going to bang into Ian Rennie’s new boat, how on earth can I afford to fix his Queen Mary, then Lisa said “You didn’t anchor us up, Les did. So with the saving on repairs that you’ve made on Ian’s boat you can buy me a new ring.” And true enough we held fast.

Sunday greeted us to a beautiful day. Some left a little earlier to fulfil prearranged commitments, some were lucky enough to stay until lunchtime and Ric and Alison stayed for a fortnight-lucky for some!!

Looking forward to seeing all of you again next trip-Brisbane River I believe.

Yours in boating,

Artie & Lisa Phillips-both (JP Qual)
