Report  Noosa River
February 2011 - Photos from the event

As the organiser of the Noosa River outing for Club Whittley I must firstly offer thanks to Warren and Rae Walker, new members of the club who live on the river at Noosa. In typical fashion, I left the planning of the event to the last moment (much to the disdain of our Newsletter Editor), and quite frankly Warren and Rae saved me from significant discomfort. We spent a great day a couple of weeks before the weekend at their house, and also explored the various locations planning the event; so much of the credit for the day must go to them.

The weather was perfect, although maybe a little hot, but it certainly produced a great weekend of boating and socialising for the 14 boats that participated in the event. Mention should be made of Tony, Gill and Zennie, who travelled all the way up from Northern NSW for the event, and it was great to catch up again with John and Margie, Tony and Marie-Anne (or is it Anne-Marie - private joke), and Greg and Trish.

We arrived late on Friday (after a blown out tyre) to join six other boats already on the water. Most stayed at Woods Bay, but Don and Dell (and her sister) moored near the yacht club a little further up the river. Those at Woods Bay had a barbeque on the shore, with Warren and Rae taking us to a lovely little restaurant at Noosaville for dinner. Our illustrious commodore was by himself that night (Miranda and her sister were motoring up the next day to join him) and it seemed he was enjoying the solitude on that beautiful new boat of his. This anchorage is superb, lovely and quiet, but more importantly very near Hastings St and the beach at Noosa.

Saturday was perfect weather, with most of us screaming up and down the river. At one point, about four of us were heading upriver to our rendezvous for lunch, with a couple of other Whitley’s moving down river (Graham and Sue always seemed to be going in the opposite direction to most of us!!).

A number of boats, including us and Tony and Gill, had family or friends on board for the day, so lunch at John’s Landing was fun, with a lot of swimming (in spite of the Bull sharks!!) and enjoying ourselves. A couple of boats went further up into Lake Cootharaba but found it a little shallow and eventually came back to John’s Landing. After enjoying exploring the upper reaches of the river system, we headed back towards Woods Bay in the afternoon.

Some of us walked across to the main Noosa beach for a swim (absolutely beautiful) during the day, with Greg and Warren going board riding. We all ultimately met for drinks, snacks and a chat on the foreshore that evening, with most then venturing to one of the local cafes along Hastings St for dinner. In fact we ended up with 26 people at the Sierra Bar (booked for 22), so it was quite a rowdy affair (what's new??).

Saturday night was dead quiet, and Greg, who anchored stern in near the bank thought he had bottomed out as he didn’t move all night- absolutely still!!

Sunday was another beautiful day, and most of us had a barbeque breakfast on shore before doing our own thing. Some, including us, went for another swim on the beach, Pete motored over to the North Shore and anchored for the morning (apparently a great spot), and some just went for a walk up the main street of Noosa, had a coffee and bought the Sunday paper. How good was that??

It really was a great weekend, and although the river system is not extensive a lot of fun can be had; especially when you are with a great bunch of people. Thanks again for everybody participating and hopefully you all enjoyed yourselves. I know Gerry wasn’t around with his camera, but Judy Oxley did a great job of taking some photos so make sure you check out the photo gallery. Thanks Judy.
