Rivergate
Marina on the southern bank of the
Brisbane
River
immediately downstream of the
Gateway
Bridge
was a great venue for our on-water-event in October. It was a fine weekend and
the planning for the event by
Richard Lane
and Ian Rennie fell into place, and fortunately no one fell into the water.
14 boats attended and a number of invading land lubbers for the traditional
on-shore BBQ on Saturday night brought the number participating to about 44
people. A number of those who came by water arrived on the Friday night and we
have to thank the
Marina
for making those berths available.
The arrangements, which Ian made with the
Marina
also facilitated our really useful mini workshop for those less experienced
members who took the opportunity to gain from the experience of the old
sea-salts like
Graeme Birchall
, Keith Miller and Ian Rennie to hone up on berthing along side pontoons. The
“Commodore’s Comments” in this months Newsletter indicates just how well
Lisa Phillips did in picking up those skills first attempt on Saturday morning.
I believe that when the boat was berthed it was then appropriately tied up in
the best way possible.
Commodore
Wayne
has awarded Artie Phillips the “Raw Prawn” award of the outing for his
antics on arrival, chasing after his illusive fenders, Artie is also to be
thanked for his drive to bring about the first of these mini workshops in recent
times.
On Saturday afternoon a number of boats took the opportunity to cruise up the
river as far as the University and the
St Lucia
reach. That trip gives a great view of
Brisbane
City
from the water as the Rivercat ferries glide by. Unfortunately we don’t have
photos of city or the ferries from this trip. (If you have any please forward
them to web@clubwhittleyqld.org.au)
On Sunday morning some of the boats took a trip to the mouth of the river but
then those travelling Whittley’s from Bribie Island went downstream and just
kept going. We trust Ric & Allison in “Ella Bella” and fellow Whittleys
made it back safely to their homes on Bribie and certainly hope to see them at
the next outing at Nth Stradbroke Is. The rest of the attendees departed after
lunch on Sunday.
A good time was had by all.
